To continue on with our Girl Scout activities during the coronavirus period, we have been meeting virtually on Zoom on a weekly basis. The girls were able to achieve all of the requirements for the Scribe badge through virtual meetings and homework. There are five requirements: 1) Start with a poem, 2) write a short story, 3) use words to show who you are, 4) write an article, and 5) tell the world what you think.
Start with a Poem
The girls explored the HAIKU and LIMERICK poem forms. They created their original poetry using either of these formats and shared them with each other at the meeting. Please check out one of the poems in the Poetry section of this blog. Another exercise relating to the poem requirement was a fun homework assignment for the girls to circle words from a page from a novel to form a haiku. The girls used a page from Winnie the Pooh, Little Women, or a Harry Potter book. Below see an example of one of their haikus:
The highlighted words:
Welcome to Hogswarts
Take your seats in the Great Hall
Witches and wizards
Write a Short Story
The girls accomplished this “writing” assignment virtually. One girl would start a story and after a few sentences, another girl took over to continue the story, then another took over, and so forth. This was a fun exercise as their story became more elaborate, more creative, more far-fetched, and more…strange and unusual!
Use Words to Show Who You Are
The girls also explored another poetry form – the acrostic style in which the girls used each letter in their name to form words to describe themselves. If they couldn’t come up with a word, their fellow troop members helped. For example, to describe Ellie, we used: E- Elegant; L – Likeable; L – Lovely; I – Intelligent; and E – Excellent. All of these words describe Ellie! This exercise could also fulfill the first requirement (start with poetry).
For homework, the girls created their own autobiography covers. They used photographs, created their own original drawings, and were creative in their designs and book titles! A collage of their final work is displayed as this blog’s banner.
Write an Article and Tell the World What You Think
The girls created this blog to publish their work in a forum where they could offer their insights on various topics and share their creativity. A fun exercise that we did during a Zoom meeting was to assign each girl an unusual object and give them five minutes to convince others to buy their object. Examples of their objects included a broken clothes pin, a square-shaped hoola hoop, a bucket with a hole in the bottom, one knee-high sock with a broken elastic, a key that doesn’t open anything, and a wooden spoon with splinters. The girls were able to tell the others why their object was worthwhile to purchase and learned the art of persuasion.
Many of the Scribe badge activities came from ideas and suggestions from other troop leaders and parents who made them available online. Our troop appreciates the information and we hope we can also share these resources with others through our blog.
